Susan first became enchanted with the potters’ wheel
when she was about 3 years old. She vividly remembers watching
a man
throwing a pot at a craft fair. It was
magic the way the clay grew under his hands. She took her first pottery class
when she was 14 and later that year built her first wheel. She thinks that
Neil Armstrong was walking on the moon at the time, which gives
you an idea
of how long she's
been doing this. She later graduated with a BFA in Ceramics from Ohio University.
Susan started Blue Moon Pottery about 8 years ago.
She's
always been interested in gardening so it was natural to focus
all her work on containers for plants.
Bored with wheel work, she experimented with pinch pots, paddle and anvil
(a precursor of the potters’ wheel), and slabs. Recently
she started throwing on the wheel again using what she learned
from hand building to come up with
new designs. She expanded her product line to include mugs,
goblets, candleholders, and other things not strictly related to gardening.
She is very excited about her work these
days. She guesses it took her this long to hit her artistic stride
but it was worth the wait!
